Based loosely on pictures from the Meyer fight book, and from several paintings- my "farmer messer". Blade is 1060 steel, soft- only about Rc 50-52. Hilt is mild steel, wood is English Walnut. Pins are actually rifle barrel blank- which was improperly bored, and so given to me. It is very lively in the hand. Once I find the pics of the sheath, I'll post them as well- they include a by-knife, and the leather-covered wooden sheath.

hehe it's a fine work but since when did farmers have messers with crossgards (well there is some very few) ;) it is more of a soldiers messer if you ask me :) commoners and farmers messers are often refers as "Bauernwehr" and almost all originals don't have any gards. but still it's a beautiful knife! :D

There tons in woodcuts, usually simple, but there.

I kinda consider the bauernwehr as a different "class" of messer, really. If you look at the one I call the "medieval messer", you'll see a different version. I don't count on the museums to have many good examples as they would have been used to destruction- but woodcuts are also a good source- within some limitations! I don't use allegorical ones, or those to teach stories- but rather the ones that are showing the "slice of life".

I'll try to dig a couple out and post them here, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thank you! I have the medieval messer in the album as well- and a few more I need to find the pictures of. I also have no less than 4 in the works, for next year...
